Excellence Begins at BLSYW

Our Model

The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women is modeled on the highly successful Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem (TYWLS). TYWLS opened in 1996 with one class of seventh grade students. The school now serves over 400 students in grades 6-12 and has achieved fantastic results. Over 95% of the

students have graduated, and 100% of their graduates have been accepted to college for the past
eight years. BLSYW will join an impressive group of affiliate schools in New York City, Philadelphia,
Chicago, and across Texas.

If you would like more information on this model, please check out www.ywlnetwork.org and www.twyls.org.

Benefits of an All Girls School

Research has shown that students in single-sex schools are more likely to feel better connected to their schools and are more likely to develop strong relationships with their teachers. Students in single-sex schools are also more likely to pursue academic paths according to their talents and interests rather than particular gender stereotypes.
BLSYW will:

1. Emphasize academics over youth culture values.
2. Expose its students to great role models and professional women.
3. Encourage pursuit of a college education.
4. Ensure that its students engage in leadership activities inside and outside of school.
5. Challenge gender stereotypes in its curriculum and activities.
